Regarding “gunpowder age”
I know being in the Howling Commandos prooooobably wasn’t an extended slumber party featuring an unusually high number of guns. I just like to imagine that it was.
My Bucky Throwdown fic, “gunpowder age,” was written because it annoys me that Bucky is seen with an M1903 Springfield in the deleted scene at Azzano, a Thompson submachine gun during a raid and on that damned train, and (for god knows what reason) an M1941 Johnson semiautomatic (which he’s using as a bolt-action [!!!]) in the woods. The Johnson is a decent enough sniper rifle, okay, despite the fact that the Americans really didn’t do much sniping in WWII (hi, Germans and Russians!), but that scope is bizarre and using it as a bolt-action would actually waste ammunition because you’d be ejecting a live round and…okay. Okay, deep breath. Anyway. He shouldn’t even have it; it was never picked up for wide distribution because the US decided to go/stick with the M1 Garand as its primary rifle. The M1941 Johnson only ever saw action with some Marines in the Pacific Theatre (and those poor guys had to get them from the Dutch) and the Army commando unit 1st Special Service Force (the Devil’s Brigade—which hung around Italy and France until they were disbanded in 1944). Which MAY be why Bucky was shown with one (hey, commandos = Commandos, amirite???), but honestly—given the gross misuse of it—I think it was just a prop-room Rule of Cool thing. Yes, anyway. This is how I explained it. It’s okay, CA:TFA guys, I understand. The Johnson semiautomatic rifle is pretty sweet. If I’d been making the decisions, somebody would’ve had an M1 Carbine just because I love mine so much. (Mmm, teen!Bucky with an M1 Carbine…)

I can’t believe this is the third throwdown we’ve done. From a playful challenge, it’s grown into this. Thank you so much for participating. Authors, thank you for giving your time and for putting up with my absent mindedness. (It’s been a long few weeks.)
